This pub is an oasis of antiquity, with wood panelling and dodgy carpet abound, standing out from the second-rate pubs found in Islington. It might be best known for the excellent fringe theatre upstairs, but is by no means a flouncy actor's pub. It has a staple of regulars, old and young, as well as a huge screen for the football (mainly Arsenal). There is a wide selection of beers and sprits as well as 5 ales with a perfect cask mark rating. There is a small beer garden out the back packed with smokers, regular DJ sessions (mainly old school funk and soul etc) and occaisional live perfomances (john hegley, perry benson). The landlord and staff are friendly, but are outshined by Rolo the pub Boxer dog, who rather confusingly is depicted on the pub sign (not an old red lion). The only downside (now the seating has been reupholstered) is the single ladies toilet, leading to shameful queueing.
