Put simply - avoid the Allied Arms if you haven't got £gazillions to spend. Also avoid this place if you want a good night out and don't like seeing people (older people too) for mild swearing. This is how Hitler started! They are about £1.50 more expensive than nearby pubs. The garden is nothing - There is so much wrong with the current management I think it is run by Basil Fawlty in the 'no riff raff' episode... Only at the Allied his evil wife is the same -just don't mention the war or u will get added to the Allieds list of barred people. 98% of Reading people are currently barred.

A few recent changes (this pub is continually improving) mean that there are now up to 5 real ales on but still with plenty of choice for non-beer drinkers. The pub quiz is actually every other Wednesday but well worth catching if you can. It is a very friendly, helpful, homely pub with an old fashioned politeness, even from the younger student staff too, which seems to be going out of fashion everywhere else. And I can't finish this review without mentioning the great juke box!!

Well done to all at the Allied - you've got this just right.

An old style pub in the Town Centre. A smallish snug bar at the front and a bigger lounge is on offer. The large courtyard garden is reached through the lounge bar and is an absolute delight. A large umbrella at the top end supplies cover from the elements and the whole garden area is heated.Beautiful in the summer and still comfortable in the colder months.

A selection of 3 real, well kept, Real Ales are usually on offer along with lager, guinness and draft cider.Wine by the bottle or glass is also on offer.

Try the wonderful pork scratchings as they are a speciality and not available anywhere else in Reading.

A friendly atmosphere and genial hosts await those wanting to visit a real pub and get away from the usual "plastic pubs".Always somebody to chat to if you want.
